Wild daffodils for Englefield Green!

“I wandered lonely as a cloud
That floats on high o'er vales and hills,
When all at once I saw a crowd,
A host, of golden daffodils;”
— William Wordsworth

There is nothing quite like that first splash of yellow to tell us that winter is nearly over. But did you know that the UK has its very own native daffodil? The Narcissus pseudonarcissus is a bit smaller, paler and more delicate than some of the garden varieties you see—but we think it’s the perfect fit for our village.

And now the exciting news:

The Englefield Green Team has been awarded funding by the Englefield Green Committee to plant hundreds of these native beauties!

This autumn, we’ll be out on the verge of the Village Green, getting our hands dirty to set these bulbs into the soil. It’s a bit of work for the community now, for a massive reward later; come next spring, the green should see golden display for everyone to enjoy.

Beyond just looking lovely, planting native species is a huge win for our local biodiversity, providing an early nectar source for bees waking up from their winter slumber.

Want to help us dig in?
We’re always looking for friendly faces to join our planting days. Whether you’re a seasoned gardener or have never held a trowel in your life, you’re more than welcome. It’s a great way to meet neighbours, get some fresh air, and literally leave a mark on the village you live in.

Let’s make next spring one to remember!
